The House of MG: About Us

The House of MG Beckons!

Seth Mangaldas Girdhardas was one of the most prolific businessmen of Ahmedabad, a tall order, considering how entrepreneurial and enterprising the people of this city are. He built his house in 1924 and it immediately captured the imagination of the city.

After many years of neglect, the scion of the MG family, Abhay Mangaldas took it upon himself to restore the house to its former glory, and two other heritage sites along with it. Collectively, they create a rarely unique hotel experience in the first world heritage city of India: Ahmedabad

The House of MG

One of the oldest buildings in the city of Ahmedabad, the House of MG represents the architectural heritage of its yesteryears. Is it any wonder Mahatma Gandhi himself, lived here after returning from South Africa? Today, with 38 beautiful rooms, all of their complex architecture preserved, and modern amenities galore, it is the definition of heritage living. Add more to overall experience by exploring the historic bylanes of old city through daily-guided heritage walks and artisans’ workshops organised by the hotel.

Mangal Das ni Haveli I

Located just a 2 kilometre walk away from the House of MG, Mangaldas Ni Haveli I is laden with architectural motifs from the past. The intricately ornate pillars, walls, and the woodwork give it a royal and timeless appeal.

The haveli was acquired by the Mangaldas Family in 2006, and has been painstakingly restored. State-of-the-art rooms of the 20th century and all the modern amenities of the 21st, this boutique heritage hotel has a lot to offer than just an experience! The property is just a few minutes away from a spectacular landmark of the old city like Manek Chowk – a jewellery market during the day, which turns into an open food court at night.

Mangal Das ni Haveli II

When Ahmedabad was chosen as the first UNESCO heritage city of India, it was not because of the urban structures. It was buildings like this haveli that prompted UNESCO to confer such a prestigious title upon the city. Built right in the heart of the 600-year-old neighbourhoods, only known as the ‘pols’, this haveli is a beacon of the times forgotten. A ten-minute ride from The House of MG, this property is surrounded by Juma Masjid and plethora of ancient temples and monuments.
Although located in the bustling Walled City, this property exemplifies calm amid chaos. Guests staying here can avail facilities like restaurants, gym, spa and swimming pool at The House of MG.

All the rooms are vast, verandah-edged and masterfully decorated, with homey yet luxurious ambience. Service is first-rate, there are two excellent restaurants, and the indoor swimming pool and gym are divine. The hotel runs three excellent walking tours, for guests and nonguests alike.”
