The House of MG was built by one of the city fathers, and it wonderfully represents the colonial architecture of the early 20th century, replete with courtyards and verandahs, overflowing with greenery. This restored hotel features thirty-seven rooms, two hugely popular restaurants, and truly unique elements, including a gallery showcasing customary textiles, jewellery, and silver from the Mangaldas family collection, as well as a dedicated play area for children. It proudly positions itself as a children, single-lady traveller, and elderly-friendly space.
Mahatma Gandhi was a guest at this property on his return from South Africa in 1915, which was then staffed by locals from neighbouring villages. Today, this heritage hotel in Ahmedabad celebrates local craftsmanship and cuisine, embodying responsible tourism and offering exceptional Gujarati hospitality in an ambience that feels like home.
This building is designed and built by craftsmen. Its restoration over the last two decades (and ongoing) is entirely handcrafted. Every item of furniture and textile is handmade, primarily from repurposed material. Our restaurants serve slow-cooked, fresh food. We use seasonal ingredients. The majority of our staff is from surrounding villages, and our gift shop proudly sells artisanal products. Our hospitality mirrors how we treat guests in the Mangaldas family home. Hence, when you come to The House of MG, it radiates a sense of belonging.
